Ep1: What is the Self-Help Theory and How can it work for you
What is The Self-Help Theory?
When I was on a girls trip to Arizona, I read the book Discover Your Dharma by Sahara Rose. This book is all about purpose. It’s a vedic guide to finding your higher calling. Rose dives into archetypes, dosha, and ayurveda.
According to Rose, my archetype as a Teacher means - “ Teacher is someone who really goes through life learning a lesson – teaching that lesson. That’s actually their lens of experiencing their life through. They’re someone that, as soon as they go through something, they actually need to teach it because that allows them to completely transmute whatever the lesson was about.” - makes sense why I’m here then.
My second one was Researcher - “here to observe the world, the object of their study, to be analyzed through their lens. They came here to understand the ways of the world on a deep level. Extremely curious and carry that childlike curiosity with them throughout life” Always asking why. Sponges. But I cannot do just this one. I have to tap into my other archetypes like teacher and entertainer.
My third archetype being entertainer means: I’m here to make you laugh cry smile, gasp, ponder and any emotion in between. I want to take something boring and make it novel. I want to perform in front of others. I want to be on stage in front of a crowd with undivided attention on me. Sounds like a nightmare to some right? So here I am conjoining all three archetypes 3 years after reading the book and starting my own journey.
I always knew I wanted to teach. I was gifted with the ability to think about things differently. I was that child bringing home schoolwork to teach to my stuffed animals. I enjoyed presenting ideas for others to follow along. I enjoy the act of teaching. Then there’s the nurturing part. Where you have to connect to those to know HOW to teach it to them.
I connected to these archetypes, but by no means are these the only ones that exist. They were just what was presented to me in the moment I needed it. Such as enneagrams or astrology, they help as guides to take us down the correct path. But I’ll likely do more on this in another episode!
Then, I read Gifts of Imperfection by Brene Brown. This was more about vulnerability and shame. A different type of self-help. Based on research. This was actually the book that catapulted me into a self-help spiral. This spiral went from Atomic Habits to Girl Wash Your Face.
As a natural researcher, I began to see a pattern. A pattern that I found interesting. Mostly because this industry makes $14 billion every year. So, the pattern isn’t necessarily what they say. Even though I did see a few repeated stories, the themes throughout I began to catch on to. These themes I noticed were recurring to the point that I began to make note of when they were mentioned. And no self-help book was really complete with at least one aspect of each.
Naturally I called this phase of my life WWBBD. What Would Brene Brown Do?
So I began researching. I started collecting information. I wanted to come at this with a hopeful tune on the self-help industry. I see a lot of people coming forward on TikTok or other social sites about how the self-help industry is just here to make us feel bad about ourselves when we aren’t doing EVERYTHING these influencers are. #highlightreel
Also, I believe in systems. And growing them. I used systems to grow this theory. I started with using a technique mentioned in Gifts of Imperfection called brain pickings.
However, with all the information out there, it’s easy to get lost in the sauce with what works for you. For your own healing journey. So, WWBBD I got to work. I began a theory.
This theory is based on the idea that if you choose something from each category, you can begin your healing journey that is catered to you. Not only that, but typically each self-help book mentions each of these categories in one way or another. And they attained it to their healing journey or dove into how it can help you with yours.
How to use this theory for yourself
So, if you’re still listening (reading), this means you’re at a point that you may be asking, “Tyler, you made me listen to your rant about this crazy awesome theory that you’ve thoroughly professed as if it’s your dissertation for a PhD, why should I care”?
You can use this theory for yourself.
Not only do I have a way for you to find out WHERE you can start depending on where you are in your journey. But also, building off of each category, you can find the self healing journey that is created by you for you. There’s so much information out there it’s hard to tell where you can start. And just like myself, thinking “if i can just fix this one thing everything would be perfect,” that’s unfortunately not how life works.
Take an assessment. Right now I’m in the process of building out an assessment that gives you results on where you should start with immediate resources to begin your journey. I’d love to be a part of your journey, even in the smallest of ways. Follow me on social to be on the lookout for when the assessment launches and updates on all things Self-Help Theory
